The Shepherd

I see my shepherd sitting over there.  Sometimes he looks at us.  Sometimes he looks everywhere else.  He’s always taking care of us.  I like it when he is close by.  I feel safe.

We have been here for a long time.  I wonder if he will move us soon.  The grass that is here is trampled and doesn’t taste good anymore.  I always like it when he moves us to another place because the grass tastes new.

One time when he moved us we had to go across the mountain and the path was very narrow.  It was scary.  The wind was  blowing and it was raining and the path was slippery.  He kept telling us what to do and when we listened everyone was OK.  Except for that one sheep.  She didn’t listen and she fell off the path and down the cliff.  It was sad that happened, but she should have listened to what he was saying.  He knows what to do.

Once in a while one of the sheep will run off, thinking they can find better grass somewhere else.  Yesterday that happened and the shepherd let him go.  The shepherd walked down the hill a little bit so he could see us and the sheep that had run away.  I think the shepherd was letting him see how it is to be on your own, because it wasn’t too long before the sheep came back.  It’s scary out there, especially with all the wolves around, but the shepherd let the sheep feel that and then the sheep came back on his own.  But I saw the shepherd was watching the whole time.

I don’t like the wolves.  They come at night, most of the time, but sometimes they come in the daytime.  At night I can hear them breathing and they are hungry and I know they want to eat us.  I can hear their drool hit the ground as it falls from their mouth.  I don’t like the wolves but I know the shepherd will save us from them.  He lets them come only so close, and then he tells them to go away and they go.

One time the shepherd let the wolves catch one of the sheep.  I was surprised.  But I saw the shepherd talking to that sheep before it happened, and letting her know what was going to happen.  The sheep seemed to be OK with it.  It sounded important that the wolves catch her, and since the sheep was old and had lived a good life, she was OK with it.  I know that if the shepherd asked me to do something I would do it because he has done so many good things for me.  But it would be hard.  I don’t like the wolves.

A couple of times the shepherd has cut my hair when it got very long.  He cuts it when it gets warmer and it always feels better after he does it.  After he cuts my hair I don’t get so hot, and I can jump higher, and that is more fun.  He cuts all the sheep’s hair.  I don’t know what he does with all of it, but I know he has a blanket that he covers himself with at night that has a little bit of my hair in it.  I can smell it, so I know.  I hope it keeps him very warm at night, like it kept me warm.  One time I saw him give another blanket with my hair in it to another man, and that man was very thankful.  I’m glad he can use my hair for blankets like that.

Sometimes he sings to us.  He sings about a lot of things, and his voice sounds so nice.  It makes me feel good.  Sometimes I try to sing with him, but I can’t make the same sounds.  The other sheep tell me to be quiet but sometimes I don’t listen to them.  One time when I was singing with him he looked at me and smiled a little, so I think it’s OK that I sing with him sometimes.

Oh, look.  The shepherd just stood up and is making those sounds that mean he is going to move us to a place with better grass.  I can’t wait.  I wonder where we are going this time.  Sometimes it doesn’t take long and we are there, and sometimes it takes a long time and my feet get sore and my legs get tired.  But that’s OK, because every new place he takes us is good, with tasty new grass that makes me feel better.

The shepherd takes such good care of us.  I love him soooooo much.
