Catholic Ontario Election Information

In Ontario, where I live, a provincial election has been called.  There was legislation in place to have elections every 4 years on a specific date, but the Conservative party has decided that the law doesn’t apply to them and they’ve called a snap election for February 27, 2025.  It’s all very disgusting, and I hope the Conservatives lose as a result.  Not that I think any of the other mainstream parties are any better (they aren’t), but a loss for the Conservatives, or even just a minority government, would be a nice kick in the crown jewels.

But enough of the that.  The main purpose of this post is to forward on some information I have received that might be helpful to other Catholics who aren’t on the same mailing lists.

First, there is a mailing from the Archdiocese of Toronto: https://www.archtoronto.org/en/outreach/news/archdiocesan/ontario-provincial-election–resources-for-the-catholic-community/ .  The email contains 2 links:

  1. Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Toronto has prepared a 2025 Ontario Election Guide which can be accessed here.  Note – My interpretation of this guide is that they are asking us to consider candidates that will continue, or expand, current government funding for various community services.  Given my last post, I think you know where I stand on that, but if you lean that way politically, this guide may be helpful.  I will say that I was disappointed there was no direct mention of the Catholic position on abortion.
  2. Catholic Conscience has prepared “Voting Like A Catholic”, a 2025 Provincial Election resource that can be accessed here.  Note – I think this is a very good resource.  There is a lot of information on this site, and it is well organized.  In my opinion, the Catholic Conscience organization has created a very helpful resource that contains a lot of good information on the Catholic positions, and where the four main parties stand in relation to those positions.  My only nitpick is that not all the parties are included, but hopefully for the next election the smaller parties will be.

Next, I wanted to mention the Campaign Life Coalition organization has created a website where you can put in your postal code and receive a list of candidates in your riding who are pro-life.  They also have a simpler comparison of the different party positions than the Catholic Conscience site, and a rating for the party leaders.  They have included information on a couple of the smaller parties, which I appreciate.  I have found this site to be helpful.

Happy voting to those of you in Ontario.

Peace be with you.

Steve.
