The Eucharist

There has been a lot of activity lately communicating that the Eucharist is the actual body and blood of Jesus, and not just a symbol.  I think it’s great that such activity is going on.  I think it’s important to stress this over and over again, especially if it includes a message that we are very blessed to be able to receive it.

I struggle to understand why some Christians believe it is just a symbol.  It seems to me:

  1. The bible is quite clear on this.  Jesus says it is His body and blood, and we are to eat and drink of it.
  2. Jesus is one of the persons of God.  He can do whatever He wants.  If He wants to make Himself look like bread and wine, He can make Himself look like bread and wine.  I would guess it is not a hard thing for Him to do.

So why would Jesus make Himself look like this?

  1. Jesus loves us
  2. Jesus wants to live our lives with us as much as possible
  3. Jesus wants to be as close to each of us as possible
  4. Jesus wants to do those things, but only with our cooperation, and with us initiating it because of our love for Him.  In other words, He wants a relationship of mutual love.

What better way for all those things to happen, than with us consuming Him into ourselves, thereby bringing Him into each and every cell of our body?

There is no better way, I think.  That’s why He did it this way.

Very ingenious, if you ask me.

Peace be with you.

Steve.
